Steel Sculptures - Metal Art

Metal Art - Stunning Giant Steel Sculptures

wall art

For civil engineers, steel is one of the most important resources that they usually use in order to construct and maintain buildings, bridges, canals, dams, and other vital infrastructures.
And as steel projects began rising here and there, several artists have realized the potential of this malleable material, and created their very own steel sculpture pieces that have shaken the world of modern art. This post will feature some of the best and visually-exhilarating pieces of metal art that were created by top artisans.

1. The Matter of Time by Richard Serra

This sculpture is a fixing that was placed at the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain last 2005. The artwork is composed of a bevy of sculpted forms featuring simple double ellipses to stunningly intricate spirals. The last two collections are created from toruses and spheres that seemingly changes shape depending on the visitor’s motion and perception. Out of all the metal artists of his time, Richard Serra is considered as one of the most-talented. He was an archetypal steel worker that is adept at creating masterpieces of grand proportions.

2. La Gran Vitesse by Alexander Calder

It is one of Alexander Calder’s finest works of steel sculpture. He decided to coat it using a bright red tinge, making it stand out more in the open space. This gargantuan structure measures 43 feet in height and is standing in the plaza across the City Hall of Grand Rapids in Michigan, United States. The red hue that was used on this metal art was later named as Calder red. The parts were first built in France but it was assembled on the plaza. La Gran Vitesse means “the great swiftness” in English.

3. Wind comb by Eduardo Chillida and Metal Art

At the foot of  Mount Igledo near the bay of San Sebastian lies Chillida’s fine steel magnum opus. Since its inception in 1977, it has been one of the most iconic pieces in the city. The structure is composed of three pieces of solid metallic bars fastened above the rocks. It is overlooking the surrounding sea, showing a fine harmony between art and natural landscape.

4. Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor

When you get the chance to visit Chicago, this is one of the most must-see steel structures to look out for. It is located near the AT&T Plaza and Millennium Park in Illinois. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, this mammoth piece of art was usually called the bean by most visitors because of its distinct shape. 168 stainless steel plates were used to weld this work of art. Its dimensions are 33 x 66 x 42 feet. It also weighs 110 tons.

5. Famed Sculptor and Us
